The FlexCrash project was presented during the COM & LightMAT 2025, the Conference of Metallurgy and Materials (COM) and the International Conference on Light Materials (LightMAT), taking place from July 7 – 10 in Montréal, Canada.
During the “Innovations in Manufacturing” symposium, project partner Stefan Heins, from Fraunhofer IWS, introduced the topic “Processing and characterization of AlSi10Mg and AlSi10MgZr reinforcement structures for mobility systems produced by direct energy deposition with laser beam and powder.”
The presentation highlights the development of lightweight, crash-tolerant vehicle structures using aluminium alloys AlSi10Mg and AlSi10MgZr. Direct Energy Deposition (DED) with laser and powder enables the integration of additively manufactured reinforcement structures into conventional production chains. Process parameters and build strategies were optimized through design of experiments.
Beyond technical sessions, COM & LightMAT 2025 offered plenaries, keynotes, and networking opportunities for participants.
